Last Sunday, May 21, the Denmark Historical Society held a special open house at their museum in the basement of the new Village Hall (formerly BMO Harris Bank). That afternoon, the group welcomed the public to come and see all the exciting artifacts and photos they have to offer. Sunday’s open house also served as a chance for the society to showcase some of their new items.

At 7 p.m. last Wednesday night, Denmark High School welcomed students and their parents to the school for a special ceremony to acknowledge and appreciate this year's outstanding students and their scholastic achievements.

When someone thinks about the responsibilities a fifth grader might have, many would assume the usual homework and household chores would make up the list. What none would expect is for an elementary school student to also be in charge of producing a daily news broadcast; however, that is just what is happening every day at Denmark Elementary School--the home of the Daily Buzz student news program.

Last week, longtime community member Jim Bielinski was recognized for his years of outstanding service to the Denmark community. At their monthly meeting, the Denmark Fire Department recognized Bielinski for his fifty years of service to the organization with a plaque presented by his son and Denmark Fire President Jeff Bielinski.

Last Friday morning, the streets of Denmark were teeming with excitement and anticipation for an annual spring tradition. That morning, along with the usual hectic before school traffic, dozens of tractors were added to the chaos trundling their way through downtown Denmark on their way to the high school.

Last Saturday, May 20, Denmark High School was host to a one of a kind yearly event for a great cause. That morning, Denmark Sting Cancer held their annual fundraiser walk which featured a number of fun and thoughtful activities, all aimed at raising money to help the fight against cancer.

Last month, two worthy Denmark area veterans took part in a once in a lifetime experience to thank them for their service. On April 19, Bob DeGrave and Mike Parmenteer, took part in this year's Old Glory Honor Flight, which took them, and over a hundred other area veterans, from Appleton to Washington D.C. and back in an unforgettable experience.

Of all the local bars and grills, none may be more iconic and well known as Basil's II. Located in downtown Fontenoy, less than 4 miles northwest of Denmark, Basils II has been serving up top-notch drinks and world-class fare for nearly 40 years. Basils is well known and highly regarded far and wide, with visitors from all over making the journey to the tiny town for a taste of the famous food.

Last week Tuesday, May 16, Denmark Early Childhood Center students took their learning out of the school and into the Denmark community. That day, three local businesses graciously opened their doors and donated their time to kindergarten students and staff to extend their learning about “helpers” in the community. Students traveled and learned from employees of Hardware Hank, Junque in the Trunk and Dufeck’s Manufacturing.

In the early 1900s, as electricity was becoming more popular, there was a desire to bring electricity to the village of Denmark. In 1916, Wisconsin Public Service negotiated contracts to bring electricity to Two Rivers and Denmark. Negotiations took several months, but they resulted in a comprehensive plan to bring electricity all the way to Two Rivers.

Last Monday, May 8th, the Village Board of Maribel held their monthly meeting at their community center in the village park. At this meeting, attended by the Maribel government and five community members, the board heard updates and acted upon several important issues.

Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 11, 12 and 13, the Town of Eaton held their annual “Regional Rummage Sale” across the township. Throughout the town, there were 27 listed sales with a variety of “treasures” for bargain hunters to peruse. Unlike Maribel two weeks earlier and Denmark the week before, the sellers of Eaton were treated to dry and seasonable weather that helped bring out shoppers.

With the weather finally turning nice this past week, large amounts of progress were made on the various road construction projects throughout the Village of Denmark while some new ones have begun just outside its borders. All week crews were hard at work across the area fixing and replacing roads as well as undertaking various improvement projects.

On Tuesday, May 9th, the Town of Cooperstown held their monthly board meeting at their Town Hall in Rosecrans. While the meeting included the usual reports from town officials and discussion and action on regular business, it also featured the board adopting a significant change to its structure that will greatly impact how it governs in the future.
