In the 1950s, the United States continued improving its highway system. Part of these improvements included building bypasses so highways would go around small cities and villages instead of right through their downtowns. While this removed people from downtowns, it provided a better and safer travel option for motorists.

On Friday, March 28, Denmark High School opened its doors for its annual Career Fair in the school’s original gymnasium. The event provided students from the school’s four grade levels the opportunity to meet with representatives from roughly 40 area employers. A wide range of career paths were showcased including public safety, cosmetology, construction, finance, marketing, business, trades and manufacturing among others.

This week, Juniors at Denmark High School (DHS) are putting together the final preparations for an annual spring tradition months in the making. Prom 2025 is set for this weekend, and students are set for a night of fun and music. This year’s DHS Prom Court consists of six royal couples who will reign over Saturday night’s dance. This year’s theme is “The Great Gatsby”, and the dance will take place from 7:30-11:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 26, representatives from a number of Denmark area community organizations had the opportunity to attend a special learning event aimed at increasing their cohesiveness and effectiveness. That night, twelve area residents representing five organizations attended a dinner and workshop hosted by Mike Breininger and Tom Mosgaller, authors of “Pulling Together - A Handbook for Community Change”.

Last week, voters across the area and beyond took to the polls for this year's spring elections. Along with the highly contested and widely advertised Wisconsin Supreme Court and State Superintendent races, local municipalities also held votes for municipal governments with a variety of positions up for election in each. Below, we have included results from a number of Denmark area municipalities.

On Saturday, hundreds of people from across the area and beyond descended on the Northeast Asphalt gravel pit on County Highway BB for an annual spring tradition supporting a great local organization. That day, the Denmark Lions hosted their yearly Consignment Auction fundraiser in the gravel pit featuring hundreds upon hundreds of items of all shapes, sizes and prices to bid on.

Last Wednesday, the Village of Denmark Economic Development Committee hosted a second public informational meeting regarding a potential new neighborhood to be built on the southwest side of the Village in between Hager Road and County Highway R. That night, the committee welcomed Lexington Homes Vice President Michelle Stimpson to explain the developer’s intentions to roughly 30 community residents who attended.

Last week, motorists driving through downtown Denmark were encountered by barricades, signs and orange barrels indicating a road closure and detour. From Monday morning until Thursday afternoon, Main Street, in the center of town, was closed to traffic as crews completed utility work for the ongoing Bank First demolition and rebuilding project.

During Sunday's Band Extravaganza (see page 1), attendees once again had a chance to take in a variety of other student-made art along with the day's music. That afternoon, art teachers from across the Denmark schools came together to showcase a vast array of their students' work in the large Athletic Atrium. Before, during and after the band concert, attendees could peruse the selected artworks at their leisure.

Last week, a well-known local woman gained even wider recognition as part of WFRV's "Remarkable Women" series. On Wednesday, Denmark's own Betty Duckett was featured on the Channel 5 evening news broadcast for her decades of community service and commitment.

Last week, we sat down with Village of Denmark Trustee Brandon Ackley for a special "Getting to Know You" or "Ask Me Anything" interview to learn more about issues the Village faces and the work being done by the municipal government to meet them. Ackley was kind enough to invite us into his home on Grand Avenue Wednesday morning to answer our questions.

In three weeks, when the NFL Draft madness descends on Green Bay and the surrounding area, a Denmark culinary artisan will be featured, representing and raising money for a great local organization, in a competition centering around a regional staple. On Friday, April 25, the first-ever Green Bay "Booyah Battle" will be held on Washington Street with 13 area nonprofits competing for top prizes.

On Sunday, hundreds upon hundreds of people filled the Denmark High School (DHS) gymnasium for an annual spring musical tradition. That afternoon, the middle school and high school bands came together for this year's Band Extravaganza featuring hundreds of students across three bands performing for a packed house. The Denmark News stopped by to take in this year's celebration of musical talent.

The stage is set, the lights are positioned and the cast is ready for an unforgettable performance this weekend in the Denmark High School Performing Arts Center. "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940" will take the stage Friday, Saturday and Sunday featuring a cast of zany characters and a story that will keep you guessing and laughing throughout.

Last Tuesday, students from Denmark Elementary School got the chance to get an up-close-and-personal look at the professional broadcasting world. That day, crew members from the school’s video morning announcement program--“The Daily Buzz”--had the opportunity to visit both WLUK and WFRV studios in a whirlwind field trip. Students were able to tour each studio and learned about the equipment necessary for each broadcast.

This month, the Village of Denmark announced they have launched a new, free service aimed at keeping residents informed. “The Denmark Bulletin” is a monthly online newsletter delivered directly to residents’ email inboxes and is filled with news and information pertinent to anyone who lives or works in the village.

Last week, Denmark Connects was back at it once again with another unique and thoughtful event aimed at bringing our community members closer together. On Friday morning, they joined with the Brown County ADRC to commemorate the culmination of the first-ever Denmark "Time Slips" initiative. The Denmark News was in attendance to learn more.
